Caitriona Balfe found an 'awkwardness factor' filming sex scenes for period drama Outlander

TV star Caitriona Balfe has told how there was an “awkwardness factor” filming sex scenes for her new RTE series.

The Monaghan star says despite having a great relationship with co-star Sam Heughan, there were still nerves filming the scenes for Outlander even with a closed set.

The 33-year-old plays an English heroine in the US period drama, which has millions of fans around the world.

She said: “You have a small, closed set and the crew are very respectful, but it’s never easy to film those.

“It’s very technical and you’re wearing your modesty pouches and because we’re host pretty much all in sequence, there was a lot of time for our characters to build that relationship.

“Sean and I have a great relationship. We became great friends and I trust him impeccably.

“It was nice having that sort of body of work behind us where we felt we’d really developed the characters and the storylines to the point where you knew it felt easy enough to do those, aside from the awkwardness factor.”

And Caitriona revealed she formed a great relationship with Sam while filming the series, which shows on RTE on Tuesday.

“When we first me for the screen test I was running a bit late it was super hot. I was sweating and I was flustered and Sam was just this very cool, chilled, sweet guy who put me at ease immediately,” she told the Sunday World.

“The two of us started chatting and it was just kind of instantaneous that we got along. The scenes went really well and we have become really, really good friends ever since.

“It is nice to have someone there who you can really confide in and have a laugh with. The two of us are like children goofing around.”
