Philadelphia Rose Maria Walsh crowned the 2014 Rose of Tralee

Mayo beauty Maria Walsh has been crowned the 2014 Rose of Tralee.

The brunette, who entered as the Philadelphia Rose this year, beat off 31 finalists to win the coveted title in Kerry.

While Abu Dhahbi Rose Patrice McGillycuddy was tipped to take the crown, it was Maria who won the ultimate prize.

“I’m genuinely shocked. We’re only 32 of the 70 roses. The calibre of Irish women is just phenomenal,” she said after her name was announced.

Maria, who has a degree in Journalism and Visual Media from Dublin’s Griffith College, looked in shock when the Newbridge Silverwear crown was placed on her head.

The new Rose of Tralee touched the hearts of viewers when she spoke about the tragic death of her cousin.

Maria revealed she has a ladybird tattoo in memory of Teresa Molloy who died aged 19 in a car crash in Galway.

“It’s moments like this, like being in the Rose of Tralee, that make you really seize the day and appreciate life and take everything as it comes,” she said this week.
