Westlife feared they wouldn’t be ‘relevant’ enough to make a comeback

Westlife have revealed that they feared they wouldn’t be “relevant” enough for their comeback to succeed.

The band, whose return album Spectrum made it to number one in the Irish charts, feared that their comeback would be a flop.

Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne and Kian Egan released their first album in 1998, and two decades later are selling out arenas and releasing chart topping singles.

“It feels pretty surreal in a way because coming back as a band we didn’t know what to expect, our expectations were low,” Kian said.

“We came in with lower expectations and we weren’t really sure whether we’d still be relevant in the music industry nowadays, whether our fan base would be broad enough to get us to the number one position with an album and stuff, but it’s been an incredible year,” he told The Irish Mirror.

“It’s been just over a year since we announced our comeback as a band and the response has been phenomenal.”

Mark added that things “feel different” for the band this time.

“It definitely feels bigger in a sense. I feel like being away for a while has built up a sense of anticipation.”

“We’re seeing new and old fans in the audience and that’s kind of the dream come true that we still can make new fans.”

The boys then revealed that they hope to still be performing well into their 70s, like The Rolling Stones.
