WATCH: Irish artist Sion Hill’s funky new music video with a message

New Irish artist Sion Hill has just released the music video for his new single Beaches – and it has an important message.

After releasing his first single, Nothing’s Wrong With Loving You, back in February – the Mullingar native has finally unveiled the next track from his debut album Elephant.

Shot by Nathan Ivor Scott Barlow on the streets of New York, the music video captures some candid moments as Sion Hill sheds a light on our dependence on technology and the growing impact of capitalism.

Speaking to Goss.ie, Sion Hill said, “This song is about being more self aware about the technological era and boycotting the corporate capitalist lifestyle and the impact it has on our lives. It’s a revolution of the self. I’m not suggesting you pick up arms and go fight, it’s about stopping to think about what you’re doing, spending more time with friends, less time texting.”

“The video was inspired by a friend who sat on his phone all through lunch and we barely spoke and this really p**sed me off. I wanted to make a video that shows a big contrast between the corporate rat race and the laid back easy going lifestyle – skating, surfing, chilling out and not stressing so much about money – just living life and being free,” he explained.

“So I thought what better place to show this contrast than New York City. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps.

“This ‘Move to the Beaches’ idea is not literally – go and move to the Bahamas – it’s more about becoming self aware and stepping back from the rat race and the social media craze of the 21st century and thinking more about a free living lifestyle. But by all means, take a holiday to the Bahamas too and bring me along in your suitcase,” he added.

The feel-good summer tune is just a taster of what’s to come from this singer-songwriter, after years of gigging in Irish pubs since he was a teen.

Sion Hill, who’s real name is Nathan Johnston, is now gearing up for the release of his debut album after being picked up by Germany-based Indie label Clouds Hill, where he recorded tracks from his upcoming record.

Sion Hill’s debut album, Elephant, is set for release on August 25th 2017.
