Survey reveals most Irish people want to cook a Full Irish Breakfast for ROB KEARNEY

A survey, carried out by supermarket Aldi to promote its premium range of Specially Selected Full Irish ingredients, revealed that the Irish Rugby team rated highest when people were asked what famous person they’d like to cook a Full Irish for, with Rob Kearney being the most popular player on the team.

Other favourites included Barack Obama, Ryan Gosling, Nigella Lawson, David Beckham and Blake Lively.

Famous people aside, the survey also revealed that 39% of Irish people rate sausages as the most essential ingredient in a Full Irish Breakfast, and shed light on a variety of unusual “extras” that some of us add to our breakfasts.

Spicy wedges, sausages covered in marmalade, guacamole, steak, chilli flakes and even fried mushy peas were all named amongst the strange accompaniments that some of us feel are essential to our weekly Full Irish!

Full Irish: Breakfast radio host Danielle Moyles unveiled the survey results today | Karen Morgan/Lensmen

It was neck and neck in the egg department, with fried eggs pipping poached eggs with 37% of the vote (poached were at 33%) and only 2% of people said that they don’t eat eggs with their fry. Just under one third of Irish people (31.13%) revealed that they eat their breakfast in work every day, preferring to spend more time in bed than in the kitchen.

While it could be said that we’ve become a more health conscious nation, 55.26% of respondents have said that they have a Full Irish at least 1-2 times per week. However, 59% of people did say that bar the eggs, they choose the healthier option of grilling the rasher, sausages, pudding etc. 81.05% of people chose toast over bread, with brown wholemeal bread (31.33%) being the favourite bread of choice.

We are a nation of tea-drinkers, but surprisingly only 55% of people choose tea as the drink they must have to accompany their Full Irish, with 23% picking coffee, and 17% picking orange juice.

30% of people admitted to going in search of a Full Irish when they are away on holiday, and ketchup was the sauce of choice for the majority of people (48%), choosing it over brown sauce and relish.

Habits: Irish people have some weird habits when it comes to Full Irish Breakfasts | Karen Morgan/Lensmen

We’re certainly not afraid to treat ourselves, especially when it comes to breakfast/brunch, with 60% of people admitting that they prefer to make their own Full Irish at home, with 40% saying that they would choose a restaurant option over home cooking.

There was definitely some food for thought when people described the weird breakfast habits that they have. Answers included:

· Pile everything on top of the toast and eat it all in one go

· Spread the black or white pudding on toast, wrapping it around a sausage and dip it in ketchup

· Saving the bacon until last – always save the bacon!

· No beans are allowed to touch any of the other food – preferably serve them in a ramekin dish (this came up time and time again!)

· Do not let the yolk of the egg touch anything else on the plate, EVER.

· Putting a little piece of everything on the fork, dipping it into the egg yolk – a taste sensation!

Pick up everything you need for the perfect Full Irish this St. Patrick’s Day from Aldi.
