Sinéad O’Connor announces she has converted to Islam

Sinéad O’Connor has announced that she has converted to Islam.

The famous singer announced the news to fans, as she shared a video of herself singing the Azan.

“Here is my 1st attempt at singing the Azan. I got some pronouncition (sic) wrong because emotions took me from my page… but there’ll be hundreds of others onstage to come …” the 51-year-old tweeted alongside the video.

Sinéad also tweeted: “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.”

“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.'”

The singer told fans that she has legally changed her name to Shuhada’ Davitt and thanked fellow Muslims them for welcoming her into their religion.

“Thank you so much to all my Muslim brothers and sisters who have been so kind as to welcome me to Ummah today on this page. You can’t begin to imagine how much your tenderness means to me,” she tweeted.

The 51-year-old also recorded a short video with Irish Imam, Shaykh Dr Umar al-Qadri, which she captioned: “I keep getting the Arabic words wrong!! I’m so sorry!! I’ll get them right eventually. In sha Allah”.

The mother-of-four has spoken out about religion in the past, as she has a well-known controversial relationship with the Catholic church.

The singer famously tore up a picture of the pope while on live television in the U.S. in 1992.
