RTE to air documentary on Belfast rape trial this week

RTE has confirmed that a documentary about the trial against rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding, will air this week.

Called Acquitted: The Rugby Rape Trial, the documentary will have an in-depth look into the nine-week trial of Olding and Jackson as well as Blane McIlroy and Rory Harrison.

The trial caused an uproar all over the country when all four men were acquitted of any wrongdoing, prompting ‘I Believe Her’ marches to bring the issue of consent to light.

Although at first, Paddy Jackson’s lawyer said he would sue anyone defaming his client online or at the marches, the rugby star later came out and apologised for his actions and admitted he “understood” why people were so angry.

“I am ashamed that a young woman who was a visitor to my home left in a distressed state,” he said at the time.

“This was never my intention and I will always regret the events of that evening.”

Paddy made the statement while the IRFU were deciding whether or not to keep him on the Ireland team, however, he later was dropped from the team.

Acquitted will air on Thursday, July 19th, at 10.15pm.
