Rory McIlroy admits plans to start a family influenced Olympics decision

Rory McIlroy has admitted that his plans to start a family did influence his decision to pull out of the Olympics.

The 27-year-old, who is due to wed fianc̩e Erica Stoll in the next year, revealed last week that he would not be representing Ireland at the Olympics in Rio this year due to fears over the Zika virus Рwhich poses the risk of birth defects in babies.

According to the Press Association, when Rory was asked why no female golfers had withdrawn from the games,  Rory admitted that he plans to have a family soon – which may not be the case for others.

“I guess some of the top women golfers might not have plans to have children in the next six months to a year,” Rory said.

Fellow Irish man Shane Lowry and Australian golfer Jason Day have also pulled out of the Olympics for the same reason as Rory.

“You’ve got Shane who has just got married. Jason Day has a young family. I’m getting married next year.

“I’d say 90pc of the athletes going to the Olympics are single and have no plans to start a family in the near future, whereas there are some golfers that are in that position and in that scenario,” he added.
