His ‘toughest challenge’: Ronan Keating opens up about Stephen Gately’s death

Ronan Keating has opened up about the death of Stephen Gately.

The Boyzone singer described the death of his bandmate, along with the death of his mother Marie, as one of the most difficult things he has overcome in his life.

He told New! magazine: “The toughest challenges I’ve faced are the deaths of my mother and Stephen Gately.”

“My mum had cancer so you’re kind of building walls and preparing to protect yourself, but with Stephen it was so out of the blue.”

“He was so young – it was the craziest thing ever in our lives. It’s still hard to understand.”

He went on to pay homage to late singer George Michael, describing him as a “friend and mentor.”
