Paul Galvin left Louise Duffy in hysterics on first date – by telling her he was reading the DICTIONARY

GAA star Paul Galvin was embarrassed when his now fiancee couldn’t stop laughing at him on their first date – after admitting he was currently reading the dictionary.

The former Kerry player was asked by DJ Louise Duffy during their first dinner together what book he was engrossed in at the time.

But the 35-year-old couldn’t understand why the Today FM presenter was in hysterics when he told her it was the Collins Dictionary and Thesaurus.

And fashionista Paul was left sweating when – after recovering from the hysterics – Louise started quizzing him on the definitions of obscure words on the date three years ago.

He said: “These days you’d more likely find me reading a dictionary. On my first date with my fiancee Louise she asked me what I was reading.

“I happened to be reading the Collins Dictionary and Thesaurus at the time. She laughed, not realising I was serious.

“I got embarrassed because she couldn’t stop laughing at the table, and I obviously wasn’t getting the joke. I sat there trying to be cool and nonplussed.

“I thought about pretending I actually was joking for a minute, but it had gone too far. She started asked me for the definitions of obscure words just to test me. You’d be surprised how intense that is on a first or second date.”

Now Paul admits that his habit of reading the dictionary stays with him, regularly spending an hour having a read.

And he insisted: “There is a lot of learning in dictionaries and thesauruses.”

Writing in his autobiography, the GAA favourite said he finds it essential to deal with the world of fashion that he has become part of the clique of.

He added: “I like to read dictionaries. Or refer to them. Of course I don’t sit down and leaf through a dictionary every day, like a normal book.

“Now and then I might spend an hour leafing through it. Nearly every day I find myself checking up the meaning of words, though.

“A word will either pop into my head or I will see something online and check it up on the dictionary app on my iPhone.

“I really like words. Simple words have helped me rationalise the craziest situations, events and people in the past. I like synonyms too.

“The language of fashion alone is very intelligent. You would need a dictionary to get a handle on it.

“There is a lot of learning in dictionaries and thesauruses. Especially if you like to write.”
