Much-loved RTÉ news anchor retires after long career

Much-loved RTÉ anchor John Finnerty has retired after a long career.

An insider at RTÉ told The Irish Independent that he didn’t want a “fuss made,” and that his retirement was a “low key affair.”

The broadcaster joined RTÉ back in the 1980’s, first in radio and then to news and current affairs on television.

He had been working in the RTE newsroom, alongside fellow broadcasters Sharon Ní Bheoláin and Bryan Dobson for more than three decades.

The 65 year old is best known for his distinctive voice, having even featured in a 2009 parody song which compared his voice to “the sound of satin silk”.

An RTÉ spokesperson said they would not be commenting on John’s contract.
