Miriam O’Callaghan speaks out about suing Facebook – ‘I had no option’

Miriam O’Callaghan has spoken out about suing Facebook and said that she had “no option”.

The RTÉ presenter was targeted by an online scam on the social media platform, which falsely linked her to a face cream and some fake reports even claimed that she “went off the rails” during an RTÉ production and was axed by the broadcaster.

Miriam tried to get the false advertisements removed from Facebook over several months, but said that the issue just got worse.

“Lawyers, myself, the RTÉ publicist, we all tried to no avail, but it got worse. It actually became viral,” she told The Irish Sun.

“My mum was coming out of Mass and people were saying: ‘That’s awful about Miriam leaving RTE but great that she has a face cream.'”

“I realised then that people really believed it. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of women believed it and bought the cream. So no, it is very serious actually,” she told the publication.

The presenter previously revealed that the moment her 12-year-old son believed that she had been fired from RTÉ, the 59-year-old decided to take legal action.

“Unfortunately, the last thing I want to do is to sue Facebook but I have no option,” she added.
