Miriam O’Callaghan refuses to quit Twitter despite death threats

Miriam O’Callaghan has revealed that she refuses to quit Twitter, despite receiving threats and hateful messages online.

Although the 56-year-old once received a death threat on the social networking site after an interview with Martin McGuinness – it doesn’t faze her.

“I understand Twitter can be a cruel and nasty place but I’m still on it. Maybe because I’m a bit of a toughie and I don’t want to be driven off a platform that is very useful to my job,” she told the RTÉ Guide.

The Prime Time host has proved popular on Twitter with over 120,000 followers – and Miriam says being polite will usually attract the same behaviour in return.

“If you treat people with great politeness they normally respond in kind,” she said.

The RTÉ star also revealed that her husband, Head of BBC NI Productions Steve Carson, is always impressed by how quickly she can bounce back from a nasty comment.

“Steve says that one of my best traits is that if something bad happens, like losing out on a job or when someone writes something bad about you, I bounce back 10 minutes later.

“I have lots of strong female DNA going back generations in my blood,” she added.

The news comes after Miriam opened up about keeping her children’s lives out of the public eye.
