Melanie Verwoerd reveals pouring her heart out about lover Gerry Ryan led to new Mandela book

Melanie Verwoerd has told how pouring her heart out about lover Gerry Ryan lead to her writing a book about Nelson Mandela.

The ex-Unicef boss wrote When We Dance two years ago, with the majority of the book focusing on her life with the 2FM star before his death.

But the 47-year-old former South African ambassador also wrote about her time with Nelson Mandela.

And Melanie revealed that lead to huge requests for her to follow up with another book about Mandela – Our Madiba.

“When the South African version of my autobiography was published last year many people remarked on the stories about Mandela,” she told the Irish Sun.

“I realised that many ordinary South Africans had met Madiba but will never have the opportunity to share their stories, so I started collecting them.

“It has resulted in this lovely book of stories which is a tribute to the extraordinary humanity of Nelson Mandela.”

Celebrities including Annie Lennox, Mary McAleese, Gerry Adams and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have contributed to the book.
