Maura Higgins is using her platform to raise awareness of cervical cancer

Maura Higgins is using her new-found Love Island fame to raise awareness of cervical cancer.

The Longford born model took to Twitter to post about normalising the process of getting a smear test to minimize the potential stress and anxiety women can feel about getting them.

“Smear tests aren’t always easy so let’s help #EndSmearFear by talking more about them,” she wrote.

“Starting with a hunt for our favourite vagina emoji,” she tweeted, adding a butterfly emoji.

The star has been praised for using her platform to address an important issue.

“Yes!! I was diagnosed this year with cervical cancer picked up by a smear,” one fan commented.

“They save lives im now in remission after a hysterectomy.”

The post has started a discussion about the different ways people have dealt with their smear test experiences.
