Majella O'Donnell doesn't want plaudits for telling of cancer battle

Cancer battler Majella O’Donnell doesn’t feels she should be seen as brave for sharing her experience.

The wife of Daniel O’Donnell – who shaved her head on the Late Late Show – admits she tries not to be flippant when chatting about her fight in public.

She said: “There is a bit of responsibility because you have to be careful… you have to be careful not to be flippant, not to be negative.

“Because there are so many people out there going through the same thing and you don’t want to offend anyone.

“I tend to be very lighthearted, it’s the way I handle things. I tend to lighten the situation but others may find that quite offensive.

“I feel a little bit that I don’t deserve the accolades I’m getting because for me, it was a simple thing to do. Being open and honest is who I am so it’s a very natural thing.”

And Majella told Woman’s Way that she wanted to speak about her experience just the same way as when she shared her depression battle.

She added: “Depression, cancer, I’ve had both of them. It should be a normal thing. I’ve suffered from depression but I’m not incapacitated by it.

“I still get on with my life and this is how I cope with it and if it helps somebody else, all the better.

“I feel it’s the right thing to do if you’ve got a voice and say, ‘Don’t worry about it.’

“Even people who have seemingly wonderful lives have these bad things happen to them as well, there’s no one immune from it. We’re all the same, we’re all just trying to get through our lives as best we can.”
