John Connors has admitted that the Irish education system discriminated travellers in the classroom.

“There’s one law for us and one law for other people,” he said.

The Dubliner revealed that the discrimination was so bad that he quit school.

“There’s day-to-day discrimination in the classroom, it’s hard to take, it’s hard to stick with and go through that,” he told TV Now magazine.

“I quit because I couldn’t stick it. I remember being segregated and put in an all Traveller class and given books to read that I had been reading at six.

“I was 10 and they were treating us as if we were dumber saying, ‘You have to read these books.'”

John also admitted that traveller children are still being treated differently to other kids in school today.

“I remember that happening with me, my brother, my family, every Traveller I know.

“And I heard of some schools who are still doing it to this day,” he added.

“If that was a child of a different colour, or religion, that would be over every front page of a newspaper.”
