Love/Hate star Peter Coonan: 'Sometimes I turn into Fran and shout at my mates'

Playing gangster Fran in Love/Hate is a dream role, but actor Peter Coonan has admitted he has found it hard to switch from his character.

The Dublin star revealed in between filming he used to shout at his friends in character.

“There’s times where, early on between the second and third series, when I was using the accent for the first time, where I would now and again turn around to a mate like Fran and be like ‘what the f*** did you say?’ and then I’m like relax there, I’m from Leopardstown.

“But as it’s gone on it’s been easier to distinguish between the two,” he said.

The actor also admitted that he’s annoyed with the amount of Love/Hate spoilers appearing in Irish newspapers.

“A lot of people get upset about that. I’d hate it now if I read something about one of the shows I’ve been watching like Game of Thrones or when I was watching Breaking Bad, that would have annoyed me,” he told the Ray D’Arcy Show.

Peter also teased that creator Stuart Carolan will not star in the fifth series of the RTE drama, despite reports that he had a cameo.

“I’ve no idea. I didn’t see him out there,” he laughed.

Peter’s next role is playing Brendan Behan in Borstal Boy, a new play coming to Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre.

The actor said he is nervous about going back to the stage.

“I stepped on the stage for the first time since I was 12. It was quite daunting,” he admitted.
