Louise O’Neill has announced when her new book, The Surface Breaks, will launch.

The Asking For It author announced last year that she was writing a feminist retelling of The Little Mermaid – and now, it’s finally finished.

Publisher Scholastic have described the new interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale as the “stand-out YA release of spring 2018”.

Taking to Twitter, Louise wrote, “I’m excited to announce the Irish launch of THE SURFACE BREAKS, my re-imagining of #TheLittleMermaid.”

“Thursday 10th of May, @easons on O’ Connell Street at 6.30pm and it will be launched by the lovely @sineadgleeson. Come, bring friends, and I’ll see you all there!”

The Surface Breaks is set beneath the sea, off the Irish coast, featuring a young mermaid, Gaia, who dreams of being human but could face a heavy price for her aspirations.

Last year, a Scholastic spokesperson said, “Christian Andersen’s dark, original fairy tale is reimagined through a searing feminist lens, with the stunning, scalpel-sharp writing and world building that has won Louise her legions of devoted fans.”

Speaking about writing the book previously, Louise said, “This is a story that has been dear to my heart since I was a child; a story that, in many ways, shaped me into the adult I am today.”

“And I believe it is a story that is ripe for a feminist re-telling. I’m so honoured that Lauren Fortune and Scholastic have chosen me to be the one to do so.”

Meanwhile, Louise’s best-selling second novel Asking for It, which was released in 2015, is set to be adapted into a “large-scale, technically ambitious” stage production.

The production is set to hit the stage at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in November 2018.
