Karl Broderick and Alan Hughes ‘weren’t allowed’ adopt

Karl Broderick has revealed that he and hubby Alan Hughes “weren’t really allowed” adopt children – but he’s glad that they didn’t.

The songwriter and TV3 star, who famously got engaged on live TV late last year, never got the chance to start a family of their own due to old laws, but the couple aren’t too hung up on it.

“I’m kind of glad that we didn’t. We weren’t really allowed.

“We weren’t afforded a chance to do it whether we liked it or not, and now I think people would say we’re too old,” he told the Herald.

Despite what other people may think, Karl still feels like a teenager at heart – and admitted that having children was never something that he desperately wanted – but he has thought about it.

“I don’t think I’m too old. I’m 19 at heart. It’s not something I’ve felt I’ve ever really wanted. I think Alan might have at one stage, but he’s over it.”

“For years I’ve gone through wanting kids and then not wanting them. Then when I’ve not wanted them I’ve gone ‘thank God I didn’t have them’ and then I think, ‘what if I had had them in a period when I wanted them?'”

Loved-up: Karl gushed about his hubby | BRIAN MCEVOY

While Karl and Alan may never have children of their own, they have plenty of nieces and nephews to spoil in the mean time.

“We have great nieces and nephews and we’re godparents for loads of kids,” he said.

Karl also took the time to gush about his hubby, who are set to renew their vows in the near future,

“I think he’s phenomenal. He keeps saying to me he’s really proud of me and that’s really lovely to have him say that to me.

“He makes me laugh every single day. He’s very funny,” he said about Alan.
