'I kept it secret from everyone': Kodaline's Vinny May opens up on his engagement

Drummer Vinny May recently proposed to his long-time girlfriend Carina Elliott while on a trip to New York.

The rest of the band were left surprised, after they thought he would pop the question on stage at the Three Countdown Concert on New Year’s Eve, where they were the headliners.

Vinny told the Irish Sun: “It would have been incredible, but I couldn’t risk dragging her on stage and her saying “no” in front of 40,000 people.

“It would have been OK if it was just me — but not in front of the whole country.

Vinny also admitted the engagement was not spontaneous and he had carefully planned it well ahead of time. He said: “I had it planned; we’ve been together for over eight years.”

But despite the couples long relationship, the Dublin singer kept the proposal a secret from family and friends.

“I kept it secret from everyone, I didn’t tell the lads or my parents. I only told her parents because I asked permission to marry her,” he said.

“I knew if I told people they could have blurted it out when they were drunk.”

And even though the wedding isn’t until 2017, the boys already have big plans.

“Mark Prendergast and Steve and my brothers are going to be groomsmen because we have known each other since we were teenagers and they are a huge portion of my life.

It just felt right to ask them. “And obviously, there is going to be a huge stag party, but we won’t be telling anyone about the plans for that.”
