Gay Byrne said he is “not up to” returning to radio.

The iconic RTÉ presenter has been battling with cancer since 2016 and stepped back from broadcasting since his diagnoses.

While there has been a lot of talk about whether or not Gay will return to Lyric FM, the presenter revealed that he isn’t planning on coming back any time soon.

Speaking to the Daily Star, the 84-year-old said: “We haven’t really gotten into that.”

“I’m not doing anything at the moment. I’m just not up to it,” he added.

The presenter also said that he’s happy he isn’t starting his career in radio now, as the competition is too much: “I would rather not be starting on radio career, than when I did start because the competition is colossal.”

“From every radio station in the country, you’re up against the national radio stations and you’re up against the local radio stations and then you’re up against a whole host of podcasts.”
