EXCLUSIVE! Miss Universe Ireland Cailín Ní Toibín tells us how she copes with mental health issues

Cailín Ní Toibín has had a busy year packed to the brim with charity work since being crowned Miss Universe Ireland last August.

The Corkonian has used her title to highlight mental health struggles and is living proof that you can still be a boss even on your off days.

“A lot of people assume it’s modelling but my focus this year is mental health.

“I’ve done a lot of work with Pieta House.”

“And I suppose being a mental health sufferer myself it’s great to be able to stand up, even though some days you’re going, ‘No I don’t want to do it’, but it’s great to be able to say ‘Do you know what? I’ll suck it up and get on with it!’… Once I sit at home and do a few hours of breathing.”

She spoke as part of a panel discussion at Lift Fest last Sunday, a regular occurrence for the fluent Irish speaker.

Speaking about her Miss Universe journey she remarks how it was amazing to represent the country and even better to place so highly in the international competition last November.

“We came top 16 and top 4 in Europe so it’s pretty surreal.”

Cailín will hand over her crown to the next Miss Universe Ireland in August and we’re sure she’ll keep up the great work until then.
