EXCLUSIVE! Ireland AM’s Alan Hughes opens up about missing Mark Cagney

Alan Hughes has revealed how Mark Cagney’s Ireland AM exit left him emotional after 20 years working together.

Mark Cagney stepped down from his anchor role earlier this month, after 20 years on air.

“If you saw that morning I was really emotional,” Alan told Goss.ie at the autumn Virgin Media Television preview.

“Myself and Mark started on the same day 20 years ago so it was a really really sad day for me.”

“But as Mark said, it was something that he wanted to do, and he felt that he has another project in him and he wanted to do something else and that it may have been time.”

“I’m delighted to be still here bringing Ireland AM, as the original, into 20 years, so I’m happy and proud to be doing that, and really looking forward to it.”

Saying his goodbyes on social media, the presenter wrote:

“Sad, emotional but a fitting goodbye to my on screen husband Mark Cagney on @irelandamvmtv yesterday we have worked together on the show for 20 years he is a true gent and a great friend I will miss him so much.”

Next month, Ireland AM will celebrate 20 years on the air.
