Eoghan McDermott has opened up about being attacked in his new documentary, that focuses on random acts of violence in Ireland.

The RTÉ presenter was jumped from behind by two unknown attackers on St Stephen’s Night in 2016.

The two unknown criminals knocked him to the ground, slamming his head against the footpath.

Eoghan is taking part in Tabú, which is a weekly series on TG4 which explores the ills of modern society in Ireland.

Eoghan’s episode, which airs on Wednesday November 7th, looks at random acts of violence, and the TV presenter meets with some survivors.

The 35 year-old also acknowledges that he was one of the lucky ones, as he speaks to a woman who witnessed the attack, and ran to his aid on that fateful night.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner ahead of the episode, Eoghan said, “That’s the bit that hung with me the most, just the arbitrary nature of the outcome. I came to in a hospital bed after a few hours while somebody else never woke up. What differentiates the outcome for the victims?”

“And also for the guys who do this — the perpetrators, idiots, scumbags, whatever you want to call them. I do wonder did it ever dawn on them that the outcome could have been completely different and there could have been a full-scale Garda hunt for them because they’d killed somebody.”

“I’m just weirdly curious about the motivations. It’s just so cowardly and bizarre. Is it just aggression that’s not earthed, that has no outlet? Is it boredom?

“Alcohol obviously has a role. Drink’s a demon. Alcohol makes normally sane, decent people piss on the street, say things they wouldn’t say, walk out in front of cars, and punch each other in the face. It is a monster,” he added.
