DJ Nikki Hayes happy to have ‘cut-throat’ TV days behind her

Nikki Hayes has revealed that she’s happy that her “cut-throat” TV days are behind her, as it wasn’t for her.

The 4FM and Spin 1038 star revealed that she used to host her own show on RTÉ, but admitted that working on TV wasn’t very “secure” and she found that people were “in and out the door” at the station.

“Nobody ever knows this, but I had my own TV show in RTE. It was on a Sunday morning. It was called SMS, the Sunday Morning Show. It was a 25-minute music show. It’s very cut-throat, TV.

“I like being in the background. I do contributions on the Today Show and Ireland AM but nothing solid,” she told the Herald.

No regrets: Nikki doesn’t miss her TV days | TWITTER

“I found when I was working in young people’s TV in RTE that people were just in and out the door, almost on a weekly basis. It wasn’t for me.

“Even though the industry we work in can be hard, it’s a lot more secure than TV.”

The mum-of-one also slammed the “superficial” emphasis on physical appearance whilst working at RTÉ.

“It’s very much on your appearance. Some of the guys would have been there for a long time. You have to be a big personality. It takes a different type of person to do that,” she said.

Tough time: Nikki suffered a breakdown last year | TWITTER

The Bray native, who previously opened up about suffering a mental breakdown last year and being diagnosed with EUPD (Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder), admitted that the support she has received has been phenomenal – but she has had her fair share of hate.

“Twitter is my main social outlet. They’ve been unbelievable and really supportive. I think I’ve had two bad comments ever.

“One person asked, ‘Are you proud of mental health? You’re always talking about it’. I said, ‘That’s like asking someone who has cancer, are they proud of having cancer?

“It’s so stupid. But comments like that are far and few between,” she added.
