Daithi O'Se: 'I don't mind changing a dirty nappy for Michael… he'll have to return the favour some day'

RTE star Daithi O’Se has told how he doesn’t mind changing dirty nappies for his newborn son – as “he’ll have to return the favour some day”.

The Today presenter, 48, said there is “no downside” after wife Rita Talty gave birth to Michael Og on St Patrick’s Day this year, and is happy to change around his life.

He said: “You have to consider an extra person in your life now, so it’s totally different but there’s no downside to it at all.

“When you have to get up at half four in the morning it’s worth it when you see the smile on his face and if you have to change a dirty nappy it doesn’t matter – he’ll have to return the favour some day!”

The TV presenter said Michael’s birth has been the “highlight of the year” for him – and the birth helped get him and Rita through some tough moments.

“There’s no question – it all changed on St Patrick’s Day when Michael came into the world. He couldn’t get more Irish, could he, born on St Patrick’s Day?,” he said.

“No matter what else happened this year – and there were some low points – it pales in comparison when a baby comes into your life and you tend to move on from them a lot faster.”

Now Daithi told the RTE Guide that he can’t wait to have time over Christmas to spend with Michael.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to having the time off. Since the Rose of Tralee it was all pretty full-on so I haven’t really had time to hang out with the little fella. He was eight months last week. I don’t know where the time has gone.”

He added: “There’s innocence around Christmas and that should be protected for as long as possible. It’s all about family for me, everyone sitting around the table and enjoying each other’s company.

“It’s not about presents or spending a fortune. It’s about spending time with the ones you love.”
