Conor McGregor announces retirement from MMA

Conor McGregor has appeared to announce his retirement from MMA.

The UFC champion, who has moved from a successful fighter to a successful businessman, shocked fans by the revelation on Twitter.

It came just hours after Conor appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s Fallon Tonight, where he admitted he didn’t “need to fight” anymore, saying: “my family are set for life”.

In a statement on Twitter the 30-year-old said it was time to retire.

“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today.

“I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in the competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.

“Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas,” he added referring to his whiskey brand Proper No. Twelve.

Reacting to the news, UFC owner Dana White said retirement made sense for the young dad-of-two.

“He has the money to retire, and his whiskey is killin’ it,” he said.

“It totally makes sense. If I was him, I would retire too. He’s retiring from fighting, not from working.

“The whiskey will keep him busy, and I’m sure he has other things he’s working on. He has been so fun to watch.

“He has accomplished incredible things in this sport. I am so happy for him, and I look forward to seeing him be as successful outside of the octagon as he was in it.”

But many fans didn’t take Conor’s announcement seriously, with Twitter users saying they didn’t believe the news.
