Cecelia Ahern: 'People think I write romance. They obviously don't read my books'

Ceclia Ahern has insisted that she doesn’t write ‘chick lit’.

The Dublin author, who is best known for her novel PS I Love You, has said she doesn’t even believe her books are romance novels.

“People think I write romance. Those people obviously don’t read my books, because that’s not what I write,” she said.

“There’s some, they’re all about love, but love of different kinds. Some of them, there’s no romance story at all.”

“I wouldn’t want to be called a ‘chick’. I’m a woman who reads”

“You’re putting books that are extremely different all together and saying they’re all the same. That’s frustrating as well.”

“I don’t write for women. I write novels for myself, and with the voice that I have.”

Speaking to the Irish Sunday Times, Cecelia said she wants to make sure both men and women will read her books.

“When you say, ‘This is women’s fiction,’ then it stops other people, men, from reading it.”

“It’s not that I’m insulted by the [label], it’s just you don’t want to stop people from reading books that they’d possibly enjoy.”

Meanwhile the mum-of-two admitted she will always be known for her first hugely successful book PS I Love You, which was later turned into a movie.

“I will be remembered as the PS I Love You girl,” she said.

“Every headline is, ‘PS she did something.’ If I die, it’ll be, ‘PS she’s dead.’ It’s going to follow me around, but I don’t mind.

“It’s nice to be remembered for something, and it does set the tone for what I do and what I write.”
