Caroline Wozniacki has broken her silence on her split from Rory McIlroy, admitting: I can’t believe he dumped me over the phone.
The Danish tennis star was shocked when her Northern Irish fiance called her to say they were finished in May – after three years together.
The 24-year-old was looking forward to their planned wedding in November – and had been with him earlier on the day.
And Caroline actually thought the 25-year-old was joking when he called to say the wedding was off.
Happier times: Rory and Caroline before split
She said: “I was shocked. I thought at least it would be face-to-face or something, but there was nothing.
“It was a phone call and I didn’t hear from him again. It was very hard because he made it very public from the start.
“He put out a press release and all of that so it just got put in my face.”
And Caroline – speaking on a US TV show – said she is now in a “great place” thanks to pals like Serena Williams.
She added: “I think I was just in a bit of a shock phase for a while. I went to Miami after the French Open and Serena was there, we had a great time.
Bounced back: Caroline threw herself into work since split
“We just had an amazing time. I came from that and I felt refreshed and I felt renewed.
“That’s a chapter in my life. It’s taught me a lot, I definitely learned a lot about myself, about relationships. I’m definitely on the other side now and I’ve moved on.
“For me, it wasn’t that hard to balance tennis and a relationship and I think for me it’s just a great thing when you can have both. If you’re happy off the court, you’re going to play better.
“Right now, I’m in such a great place, I’m so happy. I’m in a better place than I’ve been in a very long time.”
