Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh opens up on suffering from adult incontinence

Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh has revealed that she has suffered from adult incontinence, and had “no idea of the impact it was having” on her life.

The 45-year-old went on Newstalk to speak openly on the topic to Sean Moncrieff on how it affected her life and that people in Ireland shouldn’t be afraid to talk about it.

“I had to do all my exercise in the morning… After my morning workout I had to wear a pad. I couldn’t do anything after lunch especially if I had a coffee or a glass of water,” she explained.

The Irish TV presenter asked listeners of the show to stop being so “sensitive” and argued that Ireland has a large percentage of people who suffer with it “because we don’t want to talk about it.”

Giving listeners some of the stats, Bláthnaid said that one in every three women suffer from incontinence at some stage in their life, and that its twice as common in women.

“Will yiz all stop talking about how sensitive it is and just talk about it. Talk about it! Let it all out.”

Incontinence is more common in women due to the greater risk of developing it following childbirth, recently actress Kate Winslet opened up on the Graham Norton Show about suffering with it after giving birth for the third time.

When asked about Kate Winslet opening up on the topic, Bláthnaid exclaimed, “The vagina does take a battering love, you’re so right.”

Bláthnaid feels she can proudly talk about the topic and spread awareness following undergoing surgery to correct the problem last April.

“I suffered terribly from it and I just got it sorted last April. One night in hospital… [and] it took 10 years off my life.”

“I didn’t realise the impact it had on my life until I got it sorted,” she stressed.
