Barry Keoghan opens up about tough childhood living in 13 different foster homes

Barry Keoghan, at only 25-years-old, is already one of the greatest Irish actors of all time and now we know where some of his motivation stems from, a tough upbringing.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer star revealed to Ryan Tubridy how difficult his youth was after drug addiction got a hold on his late mother.

Surrounded by strong women, his posse was squad goals as he rocked up to RTÉ in a Louis Copeland suit with his aunt Lorraine Keoghan, cousin Gemma Keoghan, grandmother Patricia Keoghan and girlfriend Shona Guerin.

He spoke about how he and his brother were placed in thirteen different foster homes after Summerhill saw a drug epidemic sweep through it.

“The drugs hit the area. It affected all the families. She was one of them that got caught. We went into foster care. The families were good to us that we went to – went to a few of them.”

“As a kid, you don’t know what’s happening. You get attached and then boom: ‘Let’s move over here, let’s move over [there]’.”

In the extremely personal interview, he spoke about how he is “very proud of her” and no doubt she would be of him and his incredible achievements too.

The Love Hate actor did a lot of work in youth centres when he was younger and when he spoke to Goss.ie at the IFTAs this year he said that it is something he will return to in the very near future.

When asked by Tubridy is he sees himself as a role model he replied, “I mean, yeah, what I mentioned there – 13 homes, you know? If that was on paper you’d go, ‘He’s destined to mess up… But I went against it, didn’t dwell on it and used it as ammunition almost.”
