Aoibhin Garrihy’s husband John Burke has been named the Clare Person of the Year for 2018.

The philanthropist has had an incredible year, as he was the first Banner native to conquer Mount Everest back in May.

Back in May, the 38-year-old returned home to Clare to a hero’s welcome after summiting Everest, with over 200 supporters turning out at the airport.

The hotelier is also being honoured for his work setting up youth wellness charity Elevate, which he works on closely with Aoibhin.

When John summited Mount Everest, he took a photo raising the Elevate logo.

Writing on Instagram, John wrote, “Raising the Clare flag was a special moment, but raising the Elevate logo is what was most significant for me, raising awareness for this new organisation and the great work to come in supporting the wellness of young people in the banner county.

“Thanks to everyone who supported and donated and worked on this project so far. This will be the greatest journey of all…. ‘It’s not the mountains we conquer, but ourselves’ Edmund Hillary. Here’s to all the young people who are struggling to conquer their own personal mountains,” he added.

John will be presented the award by Chairman of the Clare Association Gerry O’Reilly.
