Al Porter reveals why he chose Today FM over RTÉ’s 2fm

Al Porter has revealed why he chose Today FM over RTÉ’s 2fm, after nabbing a lunchtime slot on Today FM.

Al was rumoured to land his own show on RTÉ’s 2fm last year after Colm Hayes left the station, however, the plans never came to action.

Yesterday, the 24-year-old was unveiled as Today FM’s new host of their lunchtime show (12-2.30pm), as the station has switched up their schedule following the axing of Anton Savage late last year.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, Al said, “Last year I was willing and ready to be able to make something happen with 2fm but it just didn’t happen.”

“It was just a bit up in the air. I dont think I’m being mean to Dan Healy (head of 2fm), he’s a nice fella, but he would even agree that 2fm is trying to rebrand itself.

“And it’s like, ‘where do I fit into that?’ Colm (Hayes) and I had a great show on 2fm and we only went up in the JNLRs.”

Now, Al’s former co-host, and mentor of sorts, Colm Hayes has admitted that Al picking Today FM was “typical of RTE”, and insisted that it’s “RTÉ’s loss and Today FM’s gain”.

“It’s typical of RTE. They had the talent in their hands and they’ve lost it. When I stepped down from 2fm I know they just couldn’t work out what to do with Al, which is a real shame because they had a huge talent on their hands,” he said.
