The actor's alleged engagement was reported back in April

Aidan Turner has denied reports that he’s engaged.

Back in April, the MailOnline reported that the Poldark star was engaged to a mystery 24-year-old law graduate from Gloucester.

However, two months later, the 34-year-old has insisted that he’s definitely not engaged – and that he doesn’t even know anyone from Gloucester.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Aidan laughed, “I don’t think I even know anyone from Gloucestershire. There’s absolutely zero truth in it.”

The Irish heartthrob also revealed that he learned of his supposed engagement when he received an email from his Poldark co-star Heida Reed (Elizabeth Warleggan) with the subject line “Congratulations?”

Aidan went on to explain why he didn’t deny the rumours sooner by saying, “That’s the one time when you think it might be useful to have some sort of social-media thing to say, ‘This is bullshit.’

“But then I thought, ‘Why do I have to engage and stoop to their level?’ This time it wasn’t that offensive and there’s a bit of fun in it because it’s so hilarious, but it could have been something more salacious.”

During the interview, the actor revealed that he’s been spending a lot of time in New York since he wrapped filming the latest season of Poldark.

When asked if he was visiting a girlfriend, he replied, “I do have a girlfriend, yeah.”

When pressed whether his new love interest lives in New York, Aidan laughed, “Maybe, maybe.”

While Aidan is definitely not engaged, he seems pretty smitten with his current girlfriend – but is adamant to keep their relationship out of the public eye.

He explained, “There have been moments when you’re in the very early days of a relationship and a photographer comes out of nowhere. You’re walking in the park or you’re having a moment that’s quite private.”

“I never want to be that person with sunglasses down, looking around before they leave the building. I’ve felt pretty bad in the past when photos have been printed. I can deal with it, but it’s not fair on the other person. It’s about responsibility,” he added.

Poldark returns to BBC1 tonight (Sunday) at 9pm.
