Aidan Gillen on the acting biz: 'I couldn't get work in my 20s because I looked too young'

While most actors may be worried that getting older will harm their career – Aidan Gillen has revealed it’s only made it better.

The Love/Hate star admitted that he struggled to get roles as a young actor in his 20s because he was considering too young looking for most parts.

The Dublin native divulged that he knew he’d have to wait until his 40s to start getting the jobs he wanted.

“Frankly, I’ve looked forward to getting older.In my 20s, I knew I wouldn’t get those intense, powerful, dramatic roles till my 40s,” he said.

“I knew I was going to have to wait. I was forever told I looked younger than I was, or too young for some parts.”

“It’s not the worst issue to have. Most people want forever youth, but I found it limiting,” he said.

The Game of Thrones star explained that from your 40s to your 60s is a “golden age” for male actors where they have the chance to play some amazing parts.

“Age 40 to 60 for men is the really fertile golden time for drama – for acting, ” he told the Sunday World’s Magazine +.

Golden age: Aidan thinks the last five years have been the best of his career

“I don’t have an issue with it. Getting older is good.”

The actor admitted that the last five years have been the best of his career and he has more freedom to choose the parts he wants.

“It’s a good time right now. I’m getting opportunities and doors are opening.”

“One job leads into another job. I’ve a lot of freedom now, more choice.”
