Stars pay touching tributes to Terry Wogan at Westminster Abbey

Stars lined out at Westminster Abbey today for a special service, honouring the life of beloved broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan.

Popular radio personalities, including Claudia Winkleman, Dermot O’Leary, Fearne Cotton and Chris Evans paid their respects at the jam-packed service, with Chris saying, “He will always be the best.”

The BBC star sadly died at the age of 77, on January 31 after battling cancer.

According to the Press Association, the service featured performances from Katie Melua and Peter Gabriel – and tributes from BBC director-general Tony Hall and Chris Evans, who inherited eight million of Terry’s listeners when he took over the Radio 2 breakfast show.

Peter Gabriel performed That’ll Do and Katie Melua, who has Terry to thank for her success, sang her hit The Closest Thing To Crazy, while Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley read a poem titled For The Greatest Former Living Irishman.

Meanwhile, comedian Jimmy Carr said, “With Terry Wogan there was no act. He was entirely authentic. He was himself on stage and off.”

His children Alan, Mark and Katherine read prayers, and favourite archive recordings of Terry’s were played throughout the service.

The service collection will also raise money for the charity closest to Terry’s heart, Children In Need.
