New 2fm stars ordered to be edgy like Gerry Ryan was

2fm head Dan Healy has insisted he won’t be telling his new hires what they can say on the radio.

But the RTE boss wants Jennifer Maguire, Bernard O’Shea and Nicky Byrne to be edgy in order to fill “the big hole” since Gerry Ryan’s death.

He added: “Sometimes when people come to RTE, they start to believe they can’t say this and they can’t say that. They self-censor.

“To the people we have brought in, we have said, ‘For god’s sake, we have brought you here to be edgy’.”

The 51-year-old added that he felt he had to “destroy” 2fm in order to start rebuilding it – but was “astonished” by the amount of media attention his schedule changes got.

Speaking at the Radiodays Europe conference in Dublin, he said: “I believe you have to destroy a radio station in order to rebuild it and that’s what it’s about.”

Since Gerry Ryan’s death in 2010, 2fm has seen it audience figure dramatically fall from 12% to just 7.6% in the last JNLR radio figures.
