2FM’s Tracy Clifford: ‘Nothing in radio is a job for life’

Tracy Clifford has revealed that “nothing in radio is a job for life”, and admitted that she’ll go where ever her demographic is.

The 2FM star made the comments after Colm Hayes, who announced his departure from the station last month, said that 2FM presenters aged over 40 “should be looking over their shoulder”.

“I don’t believe he’s saying that in a negative way. He meant 2fm is going for a target audience of the 15-34 year olds. But I’m used to that market from being in Spin.

“Nothing in radio is a job for life. You’ll get a good few years out of something but for me, my ambition would be to go where my demographic is. I’d be quite practical about it,” she told the Herald.

“If someone said to me, ‘You’re getting too old’, then of course I’d hate it, but I’d just move on. I’ll probably be in RTE Gold when I’m 62.”

The presenter, who previously worked in Spin 1038, took over from Rick O’Shea last August and said that she doesn’t dwell too much on JNLR figures – despite everybody going on about them.

“I’ve been doing this job for 14 years and when they’re good, they’re good and when they’re bad, they’re bad. Everybody goes on about the JNLRs. You need them for marketing and advertising but I don’t think about them on a day-to-day basis.

“There’s a little bit of an exam feeling the morning they’re out but it’s only because everybody talks about it. My job is to entertain and play good music,” she added.
