Irish boxer Paddy Barnes goads Olympic no-show Rory McIlroy after cosying up to his ex

Rory McIlroy famously opted out of the 2016 Olympic Games, citing fears over the Zika virus.

And cheeky boxer Paddy Barnes, who was Ireland’s flag-bearer at Friday’s Opening Ceremony, couldn’t resist goading the golfer after bumping into Rory’s former fiancee Caroline Wozniacki at the Games.

Posting a picture of them together on Twitter, he wrote: “Hey @CaroWozniacki I think we make a great couple, what ya think @McIlroyRory.”

Paddy wasn’t the only boxer to take a pop at Rory, as Michael Conlon shared a picture of himself with US golfer Rickie Fowler, who apparently called the golfer out for his no-show.

He tweeted: “Hey @McIlroyRory .. @RickieFowler said your a pussy for not turning up! #OhhhhhFightTalk #Olympics #Rio2016.”

Rory previously revealed he had decided not to compete in the Olympics because he was worried about the Zika virus.

After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero,” he said in a statement.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take,” he added.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision.
“The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me.

“I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”
