U2's Bono admits his marriage isn't perfect – and he should have SPLIT from his wife

U2 frontman Bono has admitted he should have split from his wife – but wasn’t “sensible” and stayed with her.

The Dublin rocker revealed his and Ali Hewson’s marriage hasn’t been a beacon of success throughout the years – and has faced extreme difficulties at times.

He said: “There’ve been times when it would have been sensible for either of us to go our own way but we have not and we are not [sensible].”

The 54-year-old – who has just released U2’s new album for free through iTunes – said their relationship is now a lot stronger in the new record’s notes.

But Bono – who has known Ali since he was 14 – tells all about their relationship in two songs: California (There is No End to Love) and Song for Someone.

He also tells of his sadness that his mum, Iris, isn’t around to see their success after she died in 1974 when he was in his early teens.

He wrote: “As her father was being put into the ground, Iris collapsed by the side of the grave and a few days later followed him into the clay.

“Beautiful Iris, humour as black as her curls, practical and magical. I owe Iris. Her absence I filled with music.”

More than a billion people are able to get a free copy of Songs of Innocence – and Bono said it was all part of their plan to make sure everyone gets to hear them.

He said: “From the very beginning, U2 have always wanted our music to reach as many people as possible — the clue is in our name, I suppose — so today is kind of mindblowing to us.

“The most personal album we’ve written could be shared with half a billion people — by hitting send. If only songwriting was that easy.

“It’s exciting and humbling to think that people who don’t know U2 — or listen to rock music, for that matter — might check us out.”
