Oxegen is officially cancelled for 2014 – and now may never return

Music festival Oxegen has been cancelled this year – and could be unlikely to ever return.

Promoters MCD said their decision to axe the festival for 2014 was the result of a lack of good headline acts.

In a very short press release, they said: “It is with regret that MCD announce that Oxegen will not take place this year due to lack of suitable headline acts.

“Which combined with the financial demands by local agencies make it no longer viable to stage the Festival in its current form.”

Oxegen was also cancelled in 2012 but made a comeback in 2013 with a reduced crowd of just 25,000.

It had once been Ireland’s largest music festival, with 80,000 people heading to Punchestown racecourse in Kildare to see acts such as The Killers, Snow Patrol and Katy Perry.

However last year’s  headline acts for Oxegen – previously called Witness – were Calvin Harris, Rita Ora, Snoop Dogg and Pit Bull.

But even Rita Ora didn’t gain much of an audience at the festival, with a small crowd showing up for her performance.

Earlier this year, MCD admitted they made the wrong decision holding it over the August bank holiday weekend because of the numbers on holiday.
