Kodaline's Vinny May overcome with emotion playing to sick kids like his niece at Temple Street

Kodaline star Vinny May has revealed how he was overcome with emotion and had to leave when playing to sick kids at Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

The Dublin band’s drummer admitted it personally hit home for him after seeing his niece Abbey undergoing operations since she was just months old.

And emotional Vinny admitted meeting sick kids like his brother Anton’s five-year-old – who has already undergone seven operations in her life – really hit home with him.

“For me, my little niece had open heart surgery when she was two days old. So she was in Crumlin,” he said.

“We went into Temple Street Children’s Hospital as well. You walk in, and some of the kids don’t know who you are, some do.

“But it’s then for the parents because you give them a little lift. It’s nothing off our backs to go and say hello and play a few songs, it doesn’t cost us anything.

“We’re happy to do that, because you take people’s minds off what is going on in the hospital – even if it’s just for a minute. My brother went through it with his daughter, and I was there.

“It’s heartbreaking when you see this little poor helpless, defenseless child who can’t do anything for themselves. So it is a sobering thing and it really hit home.

“I got a little bit emotional and I had to leave because I saw the little kids like that. It’s so bad, it’s so terrible.”

He added that “it’s incredible for us to go in and see a smile on someone’s face” and that he can’t believe “how strong parents are for their kids”
