Interview: Sophie Ellis Bextor talks Strictly, Irish gigs and why she's left Dance music behind

She is best known for her hit single Murder on The Dance Floor, but Sophie Ellis Bextor has finally turned away from dance and moved to a new sound.

The UK singer will perform at Irish festival Westport at the end of the month, and fans should be prepared for a new sound, swapping a DJ for a live band.

“I perform with a band that made the album with me which includes my husband,” she told Goss.ie.

“I knew I wanted to do something different. I love making dance and disco I just felt like I just needed to do something and try singing in different ways and song write in a different way and it felt really fun actually, it’s really healthy to push yourself in a different direction,” she said.

“I funded this album myself and as it has has such success I want to spend this year following where it takes me and enjoying that, I think you can get very caught up in always looking at the next thing.

“I just want to enjoy celebrating it and enjoy festivals, then ill start working on another album,” she said.

Sophie was in The Morgan Hotel, Dublin to launch the Westport festival which takes place in Co Mayo June 29-30th.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star said she was “excited to be in Ireland” adding that she has “spent a lot of time here”.

So much so the singer admitted she even leant one of her music video dresses to her friend for the Trinity Ball.

“One of my best friends went to Trinity College and she actually borrowed one of my frocks to wear to the Trinity ball, it’s not completely intact, it was a really beautiful frock I actually wore it on my first solo music video for Take Me Home.

“It’s a black strapless dress with all these jewels on the front, but it came back with a broken zip and a few jewels missing, but were still friends,” she laughed.

As well as being known for her catchy tunes Sophie also made waves as a dance contestant on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, but the singer said she isn’t interested in doing more TV.

“No (I’m not interested in doing more TV) Strictly appealed to me because I love dancing and I’ve always thought of dancers as different human beings but its amazing to have it broken down and be thought.

“And obviously it incorperates music and sparkly costumes which are two of my favorite things in life, it was really fun,” she said.
