Former X Factor star Mary Byrne goes forward to try and represent Ireland at Eurovision

Former X Factor star Mary Byrne has been put forward to represent Ireland in Eurovision.

The ex-Tesco worker has agreed to sing on a track being written by Karl Broderick – who wrote Eoghan Quigg’s song last year.

It ended up failing to be selected by the public, following a heated row in which Aslan’s Billy McGuinness accused Louis Walsh and Linda Martin of rigging the competition.

However Karl – whose husband is TV3 star Alan Hughes – is looking to bounce back and finally write a winning song with the help of the 54-year-old.

Delighted Mary said: “Eurovision is one of my guilty pleasures. It’s an honour to have been put forward.”

Yesterday, Goss.ie told how RTE have axed the mentor system and are allowing anyone to enter a song after years of flops.

But Karl insisted that he isn’t planning on trying to get any special favours, telling the Herald: “It will be transparent and we will enter like everyone else.”

Fight: Linda Martin took on Billy McGuinness during last years Late Late Eurosong

Previously Karl claimed RTE ‘revved up’ the Late Late Eurovision row.

Last year’s Eurovision was won by Conchita Wurst, with the 60th anniversary of the competition to be held in Vienna, Austria on May 23.

Last year Ireland were embarrassed across Europe after Kasey Smith failed to even get through to the Eurovision final in Denmark.

And in 2012, Ryan Dolan came dead last after managing to pick up just five points from the other European nations.
