Aoibhinn McGinnity: 'I struggle with singing on stage – I'm so glad I can't see the Elf audience'

Aoibhinn McGinnity has revealed she is delighted to be performing on stage in Elf: The Musical – because she can’t see the audience.

The Love/Hate star admits that she finds performing on stage much easier without being able to see the audience past the stage lights.

“Yeah well you can’t see [the audience] which is good, they’re in the dark. It is different” she said.

“You’ve to be a little bit bigger on stage obviously, but then again you don’t wanna be huge over-acting. You have to master that and keep it real as well but slightly bigger than what you would do on camera.”

Aoibhinn, 28, also admits she struggled with singing on stage due to shyness.

She said: “I was shy about singing when I was growing up. Then when I went to college in London I did musical theatre and we had to sing there.

“I’m kind of much more comfortable doing it on stage because there’s that little gap and you can’t really see the audience, and you’re in character. It’s not really you.”

The RTE star also reveals she doesn’t get recognised on the street as often as other Love/Hate stars because she doesn’t “really look like” her character Trish.

“I get away with it a lot because I don’t really look like Trish a lot of the time. Like I’ve got the accent. And whenever people do say anything it’s always nice, they’re always mad about the show. It’s really great,” she told The Nicky Byrne Show on 2FM.
