Sigourney Weaver backs Liam Neeson for role in Avatar sequel

Sigourney Weaver has backed Liam Neeson for a role in the upcoming sequel to Avatar.

The 67-year-old actress played a lead role in the Oscar-winning movie Avatar back in 2009, which was directed by the incredible James Cameron.

The American star worked alongside the Taken actor in their latest movie A Monster Calls, and reckons he would make a great co-star in the much-anticipated Avatar 2, which is rumoured for release in 2018.

“I could certainly see it. I could. Liam is so tall and imposing, and he has that remarkable voice that’s just unmistakable and commanding,” she told the Irish Sun.

“He brings such strength to (the ‘tree monster’ in the film) and just about any character he’s played.

“And I think it would be very easy to see him as a Na’vi. It’s not the craziest suggestion,” she said.

Speaking about Ireland, Sigourney admitted that she hasn’t spent much time on Irish shores, but she does have fond memories of her trip here when promoting Ridley Scott’s Alien back in 1979.

“It was when Alien came out, I was meeting all these fans at an event in this hotel and I was surprised anyone turned up because I was a complete unknown at that point. I thought I would be sitting there by myself.

“But these people were so welcoming and warm and were so excited and I had never experienced that kind of reaction, not in the States — nowhere. They made me feel special. And I remember flying out of the country, I looked out the window and down at what was the most beautiful landscape I’d ever seen,” she added.
