Jonathan Rhys Meyers 'excited' to play undercover German spy in new true-life thriller

Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has said he is “excited” to play an undercover German spy in a new true-life thriller.

The Dubliner will take the lead in Damascus Cover, with his character send to Syria to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist and his family out of the country.

The movie – based on a true story – is set in 1989 as the Berlin Wall falls in Germany.

He said: “I’m enormously excited about this role. This was a hugely significant time in the conflict in the Middle East, post-Cold War.

“And with the collapse of the Berlin Wall when an amount of spies were redeployed to the Middle East, where the theater of covert operations would now take precedence.”

Production will begin this week in Morocco, with Rhys Meyers starring alongside Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Igal Naor and Navid Negahban.

It is being directed by Daniel Berk, whose is last known for horror sequel Sometimes They Come Back… for More.

Jonathan is also currently starring in Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall alongisde Jeremy Irvine, a drama which tells the story of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City that kickstarted the gay rights movement.

While The Tudors star is being kept busy with his successful film career, he has also been lucky in love with Goss.ie previous reporting Jonathan got engaged to his girlfriend Mara in December.
