John Butler’s Handsome Devil to open MAJOR film festival

Handsome Devil will open the 13th Glasgow Film Festival.

The Irish drama is directed by John Butler, who also directed The Stag, and stars Andrew Scott, Amy Huberman and other Irish actors.

“It’s a comedy-drama, whereas The Stag was a comedy,” John said about Handsome Devil.

Handsome Devil follows the story of a school boy who is gay and suffers harsh bullying – but through the chaos, he becomes friends with one of the school’s rugby players.

“There was no motive for telling it beyond wanting to get it out of me,” he told RTE Entertainment.

“It’s – emotionally, at least – autobiographical, in that I grew up gay and loving sports and found it hard to reconcile the two. Writing is cheaper than therapy.”
