Actor Jack Reynor has admitted he isn’t holding out for an Oscar nomination – despite his Sundance win.
The Dubliner took home the World Cinema Special Jury Prize for Acting for his role in Glassland at the independent film festival.
Usually Sundance would be a good indicator of films expected to be recognised at the Academy Awards, like this year’s breakout hit Boyhood.
New role: Jack in Grassland
But Jack is worried that Glassland, which was made on a €500,000 budget, will be deemed too small.
He said: “I don’t know necessarily whether Glassland would be a film that would be considered in the Oscar race.
“Just because of the size of it, normally they don’t accept films that are that small.”
However Jack is still delighted with his Sundance recognition, saying that “if I never got another award for the rest of my life, I think I’d be doing pretty well”.
Love: Jack and fiancee Madeline Mulqueen
He added: “It’s the first time I’ve had a film there. I’m really over the moon about it – and it’s a big boost for my career. So I’m just delighted about it.”
And the 23-year-old – who featured in Transformers: Age of Extinction – told Morning Ireland that he believes that the alcoholism element of the film is quite topical for the country.
He said: “Glassland is a film that I made at the very beginning of last year, the end of 2013. It was filmed and made for €500,000 by Element Pictures, who did What Richard Did.
Transformers: Jack in the Hollywood blockbuster
“It’s a film about a man who is a taxi driver in Tallaght. He comes from an economically deprived background and he’s just trying to build up enough cash to get his mum into an AA programme.
“Because she has problem with alcohol addiction. It’s quite a raw film, and quite topical – especially for Ireland.”
